After a 10 match unbeaten run, Arsenal were finally defeated following a late goal by Swansea’s Bafetimbi Gomis.
The Gunners have had their most impressive season in recent years with only two home defeats recorded this campaign. They sit in third with only three points separating themselves and second-placed Manchester City though Arsenal do have a game in hand so could possibly leapfrog their rival before the season comes to an end.
The North London club have been associated with moves for many high profile names in their bid to truly challenge Jose Mourinho’s men for next years’ title and midfielder Isco is the latest rumoured transfer doing the rounds. Isco joined Real Madrid in June 2013 becoming Carlo Ancelotti’s first official signing but is alleged to have fallen out with the Italian in recent weeks.
The 23-year-old has denied all transfer rumours saying that he is happy in the Spanish capital but this could just be a rouse. Currently valued around the £32 million mark Isco is a bit overpriced considering that he has fallen down the pecking order with both Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez Madrid’s more favoured attacking midfielders. Though apparently his lesser role and fewer goals this season for Los Blancos hasn’t put off some of England’s other top clubs with Chelsea and Manchester United also making enquiries about the playmaker.

Arsenal already have Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil playing in that role and actually have more need for a decent holding midfielder so if this deal doesn’t go through then Arsenal supporters shouldn’t have too much cause for concern. Isco is a young talent who has previously been called one of Europe’s best emerging players but manager Arsene Wenger needs to really focus on their weaker areas rather than mess with a squad who have blended nicely this season and could have been title contenders if Chelsea hadn’t been so efficient.
The Gunners are looking at another Real Madrid acquisition, their goalkeeper Iker Casillas, and I think they’d be better off focussing their efforts on securing his signature. Wojciech Szczesny may be leaving on a quest to find regular football and newcomer David Ospina is still getting to grips with his new English challenge.
Casillas on the other hand has had over 15 years of domestic experience and he has won three Champions League titles with last year’s La Decima victory being the most recent. Arsenal would be fortunate to have him as a first choice or back-up keeper while Cazorla is filling Isco’s role too well to make a change. Now if Cazorla leaves this summer then Isco may be a good option but Wenger should do his best to hold onto him.
If Arsenal do purchase Isco then at the very least the Gunners will have a very capable young man to add more competition in their midfield. Next season everyone is expecting Wenger’s men to win the title – or at least come a very close second – in order to achieve that they will certainly need to strengthen their squad but Isco is not the player to start with.
