Borussia Dortmund’s blonde haired hot-shot attacker must be one of the most talked about transfer targets in Europe right now. The speculation surrounding Marco Reus largely involves the current plight of BVB and their lowly position in the Bundesliga, as well as the fact that Jurgen Klopp’s side have hardly been able to keep a hold of their best assets in recent seasons.

However, with the German international now signing a new deal with his current employers until 2019, Dortmund’s uncanny ability to let their best players slip seems to have gone out the window with this particular contract extension. This means that Bayern Munich, with ex-BVB stars Robert Lewandowski and Mario Goetze already on board, can’t get their hands on yet another star player from their rivals…for now.

The Bavarian-based club have in fact been quick to dispel themselves with any rumours involving the Dortmund fan favourite, with German newspaper, Bild, claiming that Pep Guardiola’s formidable side have ‘told NO to Reus’.

In light of such developments, does Bayern’s inability to sign Marco Reus mark a new era for their Bundesliga transfer habits, or will ‘FC Hollywood’ continue their dominant spending practises, and continue to maintain a foothold at the top of the league as a result?

From an outsider’s point of view, and for those who favour the underdog in most given footballing scenarios, Bayern Munich’s dominance in the Bundesliga has hardly done any favours for the German league itself. Yes – Pep’s star-studded side certainly went a long way in aiding the German national team at the World Cup, with the core of the group made up mostly of German internationals, but competition in the Bundesliga has seemingly become somewhat stagnant and predictable as a result of their recent success.

Last season saw the league winners finish top by almost 20 points, only losing two games throughout the entire campaign, and finishing the 2013/14 season with a staggering 94 goals scored. It was a very impressive showing with stats that simply don’t lie.

But whether or not Bayern could have achieved this feat without rinsing Dortmund’s talent pool in the process in another matter altogether. Klopp’s plucky challengers have seen their most promising stars move on too hastily of late, and as Munich have somewhat hand selected BVB’s best players in Lewandowski and Goetze, it’s seams there is a degree of futility in Dortmund’s cause when Bayern command such power.

As a result, Borussia now languish in the Bundesliga’s dreaded relegation zone, with their previous efforts counting for very little this season. With all things considered, though, it would seem that Marco Reus’ apparent rejection of Bayern is positive news all round for fans of European football, even though the German star would probably struggle to dislodge either Franck Ribery or Arjen Robben from Pep Guardiola’s set-up anyway.

Whilst Bayern’s dominant financial power over Dortmund has seemingly killed BVB’s role as potential title contenders this season, competition in the Bundesliga isn’t quite dead yet, with title challengers from the Volkswagen Arena proving formidable competition. As their recent 4-1 drubbing over the league leaders reveals, Wolfsburg may have just taken the reigns as Munich’s biggest worry this season.

With the likes of Kevin de Bruyne, Ivan Perisic, and now the newly acquired Andre Schurrle on board, Dieter Hecking’s confident side seem to be stepping up as the ‘new Dortmund’ of the Bundesliga. The Wolves are strong and organised at the back, are very much entertaining on the eye, and can become a formidable force in attack when required. They may already sit eight points behind 1st place Bayern, but a good portion of the 2014/15 season still remains to be decided.

Since Marco Reus has seemingly pledged his future to Dortmund, Klopp’s ever interesting side can now pick themselves up from this dreadful campaign, and begin to rebuild what they started just a few seasons ago. The fact that Bayern have been unable to get their hands on the 25-year-old remains the most important part of this story however, as without another of their rival’s star men at the Allianz Arena this season, Wolfsburg may just be able to seriously challenge Bayern Munich, and topple the formidable German side from their lofty perch in the Bundelsiga.
