The BT Sport pundit passionately defended the Newcastle midfielder, stating that he got the ball first and that his momentum carried him through.
It’s really hard to agree with Sutton on this one. Hayden’s challenge could have seriously injured Dennis Praet, and there really is no room for that in the modern game.
Yes, Hayden got the ball first, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t out of control when flying into the dangerous challenge.
It was certainly a red card by the letter of the law, and Sutton’s view seems rather dated as tackles like that may have been acceptable back in his playing days.
