Football.London’s Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Alasdair Gold has doubted reports linking the club with a move for RB Leipzig star Emil Forsberg, per a Q&A (February 26th, 18:42).
What’s he said?
The winger’s agent praised Jose Mourinho earlier this week, leading to speculation that the north London club could make a summer move for him.
Per Expressen, he said: “Mourinho is a great legend who has worked with Victor Lindelof as well.
“Together with Victor, Forsberg is the biggest star in the national team and has caused total chaos in Leipzig.”
Forsberg has played primarily as a left winger for Leipzig thus far this season and has scored nine goals and registered four assists thus far this season.
A true test for any Spurs fan: Can you match these iconic images with the right results?
Gold was asked about the possibility of a Spurs swoop for the 49-cap Sweden international but he took steps to shoot down the rumour.
He said: “With the signing of Steven Bergwijn, Tottenham now have more wingers and attacking midfielders than players in any other position, with the Dutchman, Lucas Moura, Son Heung-min, Erik Lamela, Ryan Sessegnon, Giovani Lo Celso and Dele Alli all able to play there.
“Unless it’s simply that the price is a great one, signing a player who will be 29 soon into the season in a role you’ve got seven players able to play in seems an odd link.”
He added: “Certainly one to keep an eye on, but he doesn’t really fit the profile of a Spurs signing with his age.
“While he’s a player who has done well in frequently coming off the bench for a very good high-flying Leipzig side, I’m not sure he’s the superstar Spurs would break that mould for unless, like I said, the price was a bargain basement one.”
Logical holes
Yeah, one has to assume that Gold is absolutely right here.
There are positions without a great deal of depth in north London but the wings are not one of them.
They only have one senior right-back in Serge Aurier, one senior out-and-out left-back in Ben Davies, their only defensive midfielders are Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama, with the latter yet to start a Premier League game this season.
Add into that the fact that Harry Kane is their only senior striker and is currently injured and one gets a clearer picture of just how superfluous Forsberg would be under Mourinho.
Unless he is set to move a number of attacking players on this summer – which could well be possible – this move just doesn’t make any sense.
